Skrei is a name for cod, in other words a Norwegian cod. Skrei is a winter cod and comes from the word Skreid, meaning in Norwegian 'Rover'. Skrei is from the Lofoten, a group of islands off the coast of northern Norway. The Lofoten is a very food rich area, with a slightly higher sea water temperature than elsewhere. The skrei feeds with shrimps, squid and mackerel which are abundant in the pure water around the Lofoten. Look, you can see little or no difference between the skrei and the 'Ordinary' cod. To avoid confusion, the skrei is labeled with a special label attached to the head or back of the fish. The Norwegians export the skrei to the better fish specialist, and also honor an old tradition; they also process the skrei into bagufish and klipfish.
