MSC Skrei/Cod fillet with skin
Skrei is a name for cod, or rather a Norwegian cod. Skrei is a winter cod and comes from the word skreid, which means 'wanderer' in Norwegian'. Skrei comes from Lofoten, an archipelago off the coast of Northern Norway. The Lofoten is a very nutrient-rich area, with a slightly higher seawater temperature than elsewhere. The skrei feeds on shrimps, ink (fish) and mackerel that is abundant in the pure water around the Lofoten. Outwardly you can see little to no difference between the skrei and the 'normal' cod. To avoid confusion, the skrei is provided with a special label that is attached to the head or back of the fish. The Norwegians export the skrei to the better fish specialist, and also honor an old tradition, they also process the skrei into stockfish and clipfish.
